Tracey Gray (Chair)

Tracey is Director of Support at Walbottle Campus.  Tracey has a Masters in Professional Practice, Post-Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management and Development and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies.  Tracey is a Chartered Member of the CIPD and a Fellow of the National Association of School Business Management [NASBM].  Tracey is a qualified ILM Coach and received a national award of Distinction as School Business Manager from NASBM in 2009.  Tracey took on the role Chair of Trustees of NASBM in May 2013.  Tracey is on the Committee for Schools North East representing NASBM and Newcastle Secondary Schools.


Alex Hunt (Vice Chair)

Alex Hunt is Vice Principal Business at Ringmer Community College, East Sussex. The college converted to academy status in August 2011. She has worked at the college since 1989 and seen many changes. Alex is Chair of East Sussex Secondary Business Manager Group. Alex was a National College advocate for two years. Alex has completed the CSBM, DSBM, ADSBM and CIPFA programmes. Alex believes that the role of the SBM is continually changing, that SBMs achieve best practice systems by working together and that NASBM provides support and a collective voice for all SBMs. 


Paul Armstrong

Dr. Paul Armstrong is Lecturer in Education at the Manchester Institute of Education, University of Manchester where he gained an MSc in Educational Research and a PhD in Education. His doctoral research comprised a three-year mixed-methods study exploring the emerging practice and cultural influence of school business managers in England. Paul’s main research interests and current research agenda concern contemporary forms of educational leadership and management and school-to-school collaboration. Prior to his current role, he held post-doctoral positions at the University of Nottingham and University College London working on international research projects in New York Toronto, Hong Kong and London. He has worked with school business managers on a range of national research projects for over 10 years and was keynote speaker at the 2016 NASBM annual conference. Paul lives in Stockport with his wife and son. 


Toby Black

Toby Black is Managing Director at RM Education. He was previously a Senior Vice President at CHEP. Over 10 years at CHEP he held a broad range of leadership positions and worked principally across Europe, Africa and Asia (CHEP is a global provider of supply chain solutions employing 8,000 people).

Toby has an MBA from London Business School. Prior to this he served as an Infantry Officer in the British Army. He is a Civil Engineering Graduate from Edinburgh University. He and his wife Katy have 4 children (all boys).


Matthew Burrell

Matt Burrell is Director of Finance & Resources at Honiton Community College. Matt has worked in the education sector for over twenty years, as a Governor in both primary and secondary schools and as part of the Senior Leadership Team at a large secondary school and a large special school for over ten years. Prior to working as an SBM, Matt held a number of senior positions leading education ICT provision. Matt moves to take up an SBM post in a secondary school in September.


Matthew Clements-Wheeler

Matthew Clements-Wheeler leads the support staff at Bordesley Green Girls' School; an outstanding school in Birmingham. He has previously worked in a school in special measures and a high-performing grammar school. Matthew is passionate about sharing best practice and has delivered training for SBMs in the UK as well as working with the South African Education Department. Matthew cites "mutual support , strength in numbers…. and not knowing all the answers!" as his reasons for being a NASBM member. He currently chairs the NASBM Governance Review Committee and has previously served as a regional judge for NASBM's National Support Staff Awards.


Gary Corban



(Marie) Louise Hatswell

Louise Hatswell is Director of Finance/Business Manager, working across St Pius X Catholic High School, St Joseph's Catholic Primary and Our Lady & St Joseph's Catholic Primary, all in Rotherham. Louise is a full member of the Senior Leadership Team at a faith-based secondary school working across the secondary school and two Catholic primaries. Prior to that she was employed as a School Business Manager/Company Secretary at her previous secondary where she assisted five partner primaries in their conversion process when they joined the secondary school via the umbrella-trust model.


Alison Jefferson

Alison Jefferson is School Business Manager at Durham Trinity Sports College, Durham. Alison leads the support services at an all-age special school where she has worked for nine years. She is Chair of the Durham Primary and Special School Business Managers Group, represents Durham Schools on the Schools North East Committee and is Bursar to the National Co-ordinators of School Governor Services.


Rachel Prince

Rachel is practising Director of Finance & Operations at a Catholic Academy in the West Midlands and a trustee of NASBM. Rachel is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and leads the support staff teams at John Henry Newman Catholic College which is an outstanding school. Rachel has 10 years’ experience of school business management having worked in various schools and was a governor at Stratford Upon Avon Grammar School for Girls for two years. 


Simon Oxenham

Simon Oxenham is Director of Resources at Southend High School for Boys.Simon is a CCAB qualified accountant and formerly the Acting Director of RNID, a national charity with a £50m turnover. He has substantial voluntary experience including project work and has served as a trustee and advisor of three charities. NASBM involvement: Fellow, Associate Practitioner, Trainer, member, workshop leader (NASBM EFA contract), representative in EFA engagement.


Yvonne Spencer

Yvonne is a partner within a Top 100 law firm where she heads the firm's work with academies and specialises in education law. Yvonne has been advising schools and education professionals for over 15 years and has overseen over 300 academy and MAT conversions. Yvonne also specialises in the development and implementation of child protection systems in former communist states and has advised governments in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. More recently her overseas work has focused on the development of national professional standards. This work, together with her firm's education practice, brings both a practical and strategic perspective to her work as a NASBM trustee. Yvonne was instructed in the first Right to Education cases in this country under the Human Rights Act. She is the first female lawyer to hold the office of Chairman of the Solicitor Advocates Higher Courts Association and is an appointed expert to J.K. Rowling's international children's charity Lumos. 


Trevor Summerson

Formerly Director responsible for the development of the suite of programmes for School Business Management at the National College for School Leadership, Trevor is currently international advisor to the board of the Association of School Business Officials based in Reston, Virginia. He has an MBA in Personnel Management and Employment relations, is a fellow of NASBM and a companion of the Institute of Administrative Management.

Trevor is convinced that the role of the School Business Manager will be critical in ensuring our schools are fit for purpose and are able to meet the challenges of 21st century. He believes passionately that this is not simply a case of improving SBMs’ technical capability but also requires SBMs to evolve into business leaders working with pedagogical leaders for the benefit of the children we all serve.

Trevor has two children, Debbie and Christopher, and a grandson, Matthew.
