Lock-down – providing safety and security for staff and pupils

Dataphone are an ISBL Approved Partner (since 2008) supporting over 600 schools with their telecoms.

Protection and safety of property, staff and pupils has always been a top priority for schools and now, with threat levels in the UK increasing, having an effective ‘Lockdown’ process is critical.

When reviewing your school’s lock-down process, your tannoy system is a good place to start. Dataphone can set up a tannoy system to reach all classrooms, as well as outside areas, which can be easily controlled through your telephone system in the event of complete or partial lockdown.

Regular testing of safety drills is essential and if staff and pupils get used to the drills, they will become second nature to them, helping to maintain claim in the event of an emergency.  Often, whilst every schools will have and test a fire evacuation procedure the lockdown procedure gets overlooked.

Situations which could trigger your lockdown procedure include;

  • An intruder on the school premises
  • A threatening telephone call
  • A disturbance in the local community
  • A dangerous dog on or near the school premises
  • A warning being received regarding a risk of air pollution of chemical, biological or radiological contaminants

There is little that can be done to prevent an attack, so it is vital that schools are prepared. Having efficient communication systems and clear evacuation and lockdown procedures in place will give you peace of mind that you are doing all you can to keep your staff and pupils safe.
