Introduction to Managing School Building Compliance

Overview

  • Managing a building is not a responsibility to be taken lightly. There is a real risk that lack of knowledge, experience and processes can put lives at risk, with those responsible facing prosecution, or worse, a prison term.

  • There has been a recent successful prosecution of an Academy Trust for breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Sections 2(1) and 3(1), for carrying out poorly planned and managed refurbishment and maintenance works.

  • It is often not clear who in educational premises are responsible for compliance-related issues. Where does responsibility start and end? Is it all down to the headteacher? What about the premises manager (if you have one), bursar or business manager? What is the responsibility of the board of trustees or governors? Has the necessary training been provided to staff?

  • This training provides a unique insight and help you to consider whether your organisation has all the necessary procedures in place and that they are followed.

Learning Outcomes

Is it clear to you who is responsible for the various areas of property statutory compliance? Is it clear to all those involved where their responsibilities start and finish? Do you have clear policies, processes and procedures on responsibility? Are these clearly documented?

If you don’t know the answer to the above or have answered ‘no’ to any of the questions, then this is the event for you. Delegates will:

Gain a better understanding of the main areas of building compliance.

Obtain an understanding of what policies, procedures and process you should have in place explore areas of good practice.

About the training

  • This event will set out what you need to do to demonstrate a commitment to making sure that everyone visiting and using your premises are kept safe, and what the penalties are if you get it wrong. We will outline some of the key areas of legislative and statutory compliance including asbestos management, fire risk, CDM etc and the associated servicing, testing and inspection regimes. We will also highlight some areas that you may never have thought about.

We will move on to illustrate some of the real risks and issues that you might face in managing your buildings, and challenge the potential for contravention through some of your compliance procedures.

  • Delivered via the Goto Training webinar platform delegates will be able to interact with the presenter posing questions and providing feedback on their experiences whilst viewing a live presentation. In advance of the event delegates will receive full log on instructions and a detailed event programme along with the presentation slides.

  • This half day event begins with logon at 09.00 hrs for a 09.30 hrs start, and will finish at 12.30.

  • This event is vital for those responsible for premises management, including head teachers, school bursars, business managers, premises managers, members of the board of trustees/governing body, facilities managers, or anyone else with responsibilities for, or an oversight of, compliance issues within education buildings
