What is Operational Excellence?

Operational Excellence (OpEx) is defined as “the cultural transformation and technical enablement of an organisation that allows it to perform optimally and achieve its strategic objectives”.

It is a proven industry methodology that puts continuous improvement and high-quality service at the forefront of the approach.

Our training, consultancy and support offer OpEx for Education is underpinned by our recently developed education-specific OpEx framework, in turn developed from our innovative and extensive OpEx research programme.

It has been developed to deal with sector resource challenges and is in line with Department for Education and Treasury thinking in relation to efficiencies, new technologies and policy direction.

Our training will equip you and your organisation with the knowledge, skills and behavioural competencies required to support an operational excellence approach and contribute significantly to creating and maintaining the optimal conditions for teaching and learning.

Conservative estimates, based on our research and the opinion of OpEx experts, suggest that on average, schools and trusts can achieve 20-30% capacity savings if they commit to the OpEx for Education methodology and improvements in all the key domains. They will see:

  • less waste

  • better deployment of human effort and technology

  • better use of data

  • a focus on high-quality service

  • a well-embedded culture of continuous improvement.

The OpEx for Education framework, developed through extensive research and fieldwork, aims to enhance operational effectiveness in school and trust settings. It covers ten key domains essential for achieving operational excellence, ultimately leading to improved educational outcomes for children.

By adopting this framework and undertaking the OpEx for Education training and support programme, schools and trusts can expect to see more cohesive teams, reduced waste and duplication, and better-informed decision-making processes. The ultimate goal is to enhance the delivery of education and improve outcomes for students.
